AT&T said its shift to Ericsson will fast-track its network overhaul and allow it to buy hardware and software from a broader range of suppliers in future years. Photo: patrick t. fallon/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesAT&T struck a deal with Ericsson to buy up to $14 billion of its hardware and services after the Swedish equipment supplier pledged to open up its software to competing systems. The five-year agreement would move virtually all of AT&T’s new purchases of certain cell-tower equipment to Ericsson, replacing existing machinery from Finnish rival Nokia in many markets. The Dallas-based telecom giant said it plans to start the swap next year and aims to have 70% of its wireless network traffic passing through open platforms by late 2026.

Kate Johnson is betting nearly $1 million that the investors fleeing her company are wrong. Johnson bought 1 million shares of Lumen Technologies stock last week as it dipped into penny-stock territory, costing the telecommunications company boss $970,000. The former Microsoft and General Electric executive said the purchase made sense as she felt investors overreacted to a complicated third-quarter report and restructuring plan.

T-Mobile has had a freer hand to adjust its wireless plans since many of the state and federal agreements tied to its Sprint takeover expired earlier this year. Photo: Yuki Iwamura/Bloomberg NewsT-Mobile US said it is scrapping a program that would have forced some customers into more expensive wireless plans, citing customer blowback. Details of the planned upgrades surfaced on Reddit earlier this month after T-Mobile started training its support staff to respond to the program. Executives planned to shift customers on some older plans to newer tiers with more features that generally cost $5 to $10 more per line unless they opted out of the change by contacting the company.

Cellphone carriers facing roughly $200 million in fines for sharing their customers’ locations are for now shielded from paying by the Federal Communications Commission’s partisan deadlock, according to people familiar with the matter. The U.S. telecom regulator currently has four commissioners—two Democrats and two Republicans—and needs at least three votes to move forward with fines it proposed years ago on the biggest wireless service providers.
SpaceX has for years launched payloads for the Pentagon, NASA and other government customers. Elon Musk’s SpaceX is stepping up its efforts to win more national-security business after years of keeping its work under wraps. The Hawthorne, Calif.-based company this month posted more than 30 job openings on its website for Starshield, a business that it says offers Earth observation, communication and other services to government clients. Most of the job listings say a top-secret clearance is preferred or required.
CEO Hans Vestberg said he would focus on more consistency between Verizon’s network product and its operational results. Verizon Communications Inc. replaced consumer unit chief Manon Brouillette after a little less than a year in the role, the latest sign of the wireless company’s struggle to appeal to nonbusiness clients. The cellphone carrier said Monday that Chief Executive Hans Vestberg , 57, would assume the immediate responsibilities of Ms. Brouillette, 54. Mr. Vestberg said in a statement that he would focus “on driving a closer consistency between the top quality network product we’re bringing to market and the operational results we’re producing.”
Elon Musk has described the Starlink internet business as a way for SpaceX to raise funds for a mission to Mars, and he has discussed investing at least $5 billion in the service. U.S. regulators granted SpaceX permission to launch up to 7,500 upgraded satellites for its Starlink internet business, but withheld approval for a larger network sought by the Elon Musk-led business. The Federal Communications Commission said Thursday that deploying more SpaceX satellites would be in the public interest, but it stopped short of immediately clearing the nearly 30,000 satellites it requested. The agency’s order, however, left the door open for further deployments by the company in the future.
Hikvision is the top worldwide seller of professional security equipment and ranks No. 5 in the U.S. The Federal Communications Commission voted 4-0 to ban sales of new telecom and surveillance equipment made by several Chinese companies, arguing that their ownership and practices threaten U.S. national security. The rule change affects 10 companies already subject to other restrictions and prohibits them from marketing or importing new products. They include security-camera makers Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co., Hytera Communications Corp. and Zhejiang Dahua Technology Co. and telecom equipment makers Huawei Technologies Co. and ZTE Corp.
FCC Publishes Map Showing Broadband Coverage Gaps
  + stars: | 2022-11-18 | by ( Drew Fitzgerald | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The FCC map shows millions of addresses with information about their access to broadband internet service. A new federal broadband map published Friday shows roughly 2% of American residential addresses lack access to broadband internet service, though officials said that figure could change as their database improves. The Federal Communications Commission released the map, as ordered by a 2020 law, showing millions of addresses with information about their access to broadband internet service from a variety of companies.
T-Mobile’s customer gains have led the wireless industry for most of the past two years. T-Mobile US Inc. said its cost and customer trends had improved heading into the end of 2022 after the company logged its strongest jump in core phone subscriptions since its merger with Sprint Corp. The cellphone carrier reported a net gain of 854,000 postpaid phone connections during the recent quarter, a postmerger record that outpaced both AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. The tally topped the average estimate of 725,000 from analysts polled by FactSet.
